AbstractsClimatic Change and Agriculture in Central CanadaMike Brklacich1, David Burhoe Our recent work in Central Canada considers the full set of stressors confronting farming and suggests recent environmental legislation, possible changes in supply management systems, reductions in agricultural services, a continuation of low commodity prices as well as the protrusion of urban influences into the country side were seen as more substantial threats over the short to medium term than was climatic change. However the capacity of farms throughout the region to adapt to external stresses is not uniform and some types of farms will be less able to endure stresses associated with climatic change. Overall, this research demonstrates the vulnerability Central Canada's farming systems will be influenced by local factors such as access to resources and technology as well as future external factors such as climatic changes.
