Mainstreaming Adaptation in Water and Climate

At the global level, policy debates regarding water resources and sustainable development are guided by agreements and action plans such as Agenda 21, the WSSD and the Millennium Development Goals. Similarly, global debates about climate change fall under the UNFCCC umbrella. Although climate change will have a growing influence on the environment and water resources in particular, the two policy debates are moving in parallel, without much consideration for the other. This divide also exists at the national level, where donor agencies such as CIDA are involved in both climate change adaptation projects as well as water supply and sanitation projects. In order to meet the human and economic development targets agreed upon by the UN and the international community, there is an urgent need to mainstream water development and climate adaptation at the international, bi-lateral and local level. This presentation will illustrate examples of successful actions undertaken at all the levels.
