Agricultural production takes place under a climatic regime of sufficient length for crop establishment, growth and maturity, with adequate heat units and precipitation to meet crop needs. Such regimes should have sufficient regularity from year to year so as to allow security of production. Whereas there is sufficient medium term (~30yr) stability in climate regimes to allow for defined production systems, inter-annual variability can significantly enhance short-term risks to production. Researchers at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have developed climate change scenarios for use in agricultural impact and adaptation studies, and are studying changes in historical and projected climate variability. This presentation discusses the implications of climate change to changes in agroclimatic indices and explores changes in historical and projected variability.
