Lake Surface Temperatures Across Canada from Satellite Observations and Modelling

Assessing the impact of climate change on Canadian freshwater fish and fishery has raised increasing attention. It is important because Canadian freshwater fisheries are worth >$5B/yr and are highly vulnerable to adverse climate change impacts, and because IPCC climate models predict future climate change to be more pronounced at northern high latitudes. The studies of climate change impact on fish and fisheries are largely hindered by the lack of data for analysing the large spatial scale dynamics of lake water temperature regimes and their relationship with climate. As such, we processed lake surface temperature observations in 2001 and 2002 from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) for all Canadian lakes with surface area >100 km2. We also processed the corresponding ground climate observations from meteorological stations that are closest to each of the lakes. Based on these data, we constructed models for simulating lake temperature and ice in and out dates from climate variables. In this presentation, we show the preliminary results from the simulations of lake surface temperature using the model of Kettle et al. (Limnol. Oceanogr., 49, 2004, 271-282). Modelling accuracies and areas for further improvement are also discussed.
